The Four Rivers Summer Ultimate Intensive:
The intensive is located at and sponsored by Four Rivers Charter Public School in Greenfield, Massachusetts. We are heading into our seventh year and, as we learn from each participant, we continue to expand what we offer.
Last year's program was a five-day intensive where athletes learned key fundamentals and skills to excel in the sport of ultimate as well as going to a local disc golf course. 2017 was the first year we expanded our program into different sections throughout the day to provide players with optimal improvements to their skills. We did separation between boys and girls for certain activities, as well as less experienced players and more experienced players. We found that these groupings helped participants thrive more by being able to work on the key skills they needed to improve on with their peers.
What we do during the week:
We start our week off by setting skill goals. We then work on them during concentrated sessions every day. We have mini tournaments, full-field play, contests, and fun layout drills. We do competitive league play as well. Players learn techniques for conditioning, flexibility, and how to lead a healthy lifestyle. The Spirit of the Game is an important concept in ultimate and is a focus during our week.
We also bring in highly skilled ultimate players and Four Rivers Alumni to contribute their knowledge and enthusiasm, as well as teach specific skills and insights that they learned on their own teams through workshop time each morning. Besides our workshops offered by these highly skilled players, we also have a multitude of highly skilled interns to help with teaching and facilitating. This allows our player to staff ratio to be approximately one staff to every four players. This allows a lot of 1-1 instructional time.
We always provide an evaluation for the participants to voice their desired preferred activities, and how to improve our program. We also do additional fun activities (besides playing ultimate of course) like: contests for prizes, lay-out "drills" on a water slide, and the always popular field trip to a local disc golf course. Overall it is a wonderful, lively and athletic week for everyone involved!
Summer 2019 will be June 24th-28th. The program runs from 9am-3pm each day. We offer separation of gender, age and skill level to be able to provide optimal skill increase throughout the week.
